A journey from the capital to Odisha's most iconic shore — through ancient temples, holy sands, a wheel that told time before clocks existed, and a city of thousand shrines. Everything you need, all in one guide.

Three Destinations, One Unforgettable Journey
Each destination in Odisha's sacred triangle carries centuries of history, devotion, and artistry — and each is utterly different from the other.
Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar is your point of arrival and your richest surprise. Once home to over 700 temples, around 500 still stand — making the old city one of the densest concentrations of Hindu religious architecture anywhere on earth. The great Lingaraj Temple, built in the 11th century, is the crown jewel: a 55-metre shikhara rising above a complex of 150 subsidiary shrines, its sandstone surface carved with an intricacy that no photograph adequately captures.
Beyond the temples, modern Bhubaneswar is a clean, well-connected city with excellent hotels across all budgets, a good restaurant scene, and Biju Patnaik International Airport — your likely point of arrival from Delhi.
Puri
Puri is one of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism — and standing before the towering shikhara of the Jagannath Temple, even a non-religious visitor feels the weight of that designation. The temple, built in the 12th century and soaring 65 metres above the surrounding cityscape, is the spiritual heart of Odisha. The famous Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) each July draws millions of devotees from across the world.
Beyond the divine, Puri's 8-kilometre beach is one of the most beautiful on India's east coast — wide, golden-sanded, and relatively uncrowded compared to western Indian beaches. Marine Drive facing the Bay of Bengal is perfect for sunrise walks.
Konark
Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I, the Konark Sun Temple is one of the greatest architectural achievements in Indian history and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Conceived as a colossal stone chariot for the Sun God Surya, it rides on 24 intricately carved wheels — each a functioning sundial — and is pulled by seven stone horses. The quality of its sculptures, ranging from celestial beings to erotic friezes, rivals the finest stone-carving anywhere in the world.
Allow a minimum of 3–4 hours here. The Archaeological Museum on-site houses fallen sculptures and provides essential context. Konark's beach, 3 km from the temple, is quiet and beautiful — a perfect sunset point.
"To visit Konark is to understand what happens when an entire civilisation pours its faith, its mathematics, and its art into a single act of creation in stone."— OdishaRide Travel Journal

What Not to Miss
Lingaraj Temple
The 11th-century Lingaraj Temple is the apex of Kalinga temple architecture. Its 55-metre shikhara, carved surface, and 150 subsidiary shrines form a self-contained sacred city. The Deula style here directly influenced Konark's design.
Best visited 7–9 AM when crowds are thin and morning light is golden. Non-Hindu visitors may view from the raised platform on the northern side.Mukteswar Temple
Often called the "Gem of Odisha Architecture," Mukteswar is smaller than Lingaraj but arguably more refined. Its ornamental gateway (torana) with intricate diamond-net lattice is unique in all of Indian temple art.
Located next to Parsurameswara Temple — visit both in a single stop. The stone carving here is the finest you'll see in Bhubaneswar.Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves
Twin hills with 33 Jain rock-cut caves from around 1st century BC, built during King Kharavela's reign. The carved cells, elephants, and inscriptions are among the oldest in Odisha, with views over the modern city from the top.
Comfortable walking shoes needed — the hill path is uneven. Hathigumpha inscription of Kharavela on Udayagiri is a landmark historical text.Dhauligiri Peace Pagoda
Standing above the ancient battlefield where Ashoka's Kalinga War changed history and inspired one of humanity's greatest philosophical transformations, Dhauligiri's white Japanese-gifted peace pagoda is a place of remarkable stillness.
The 3rd-century BC Ashokan rock edicts at the base of the hill are among the oldest surviving royal inscriptions in India.Ekamra Haat
Odisha's premier traditional craft market, where artisans from across the state sell Pattachitra paintings, Sambalpuri sarees, appliqué, stone carvings, and silver filigree. Live craft demonstrations most afternoons.
Open daily 10 AM – 9 PM. Odissi and Chhau dance performances take place on the central stage on weekends.Nandankanan Zoo
One of India's better zoological parks, with white tigers, melanistic tigers, gharials, and India's first zoo-born chimpanzee. Set around Chandaka forest and Kanjia Lake — genuinely pleasant grounds.
White tigers are the main draw. Visit early morning when big cats are most active. Allow 3 hours for the full circuit.Jagannath Temple
One of the four sacred dhams of Hinduism. The 12th-century temple complex covers 10.7 acres and houses the wooden deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra — repainted and re-consecrated every 12–19 years in the Nabakalebara ceremony.
The Sudarshan Chakra (sacred wheel) at the apex is said to always face the viewer regardless of direction — a phenomenon confirmed by geometry. Non-Hindu visitors may view from the Raghunandan Library rooftop opposite the main gate.Puri Beach — Sunrise
Puri's 8-km golden beach is best experienced at 5:30–6:30 AM when local fishermen bring in the night's catch and the horizon turns rose-gold. The beach runs from the fishing village in the north to the lighthouse in the south.
Swimming is permitted but strong rip currents exist — swim only in lifeguard-patrolled sections near the main beach hotels. Avoid swimming between October–November (cyclone season).Raghurajpur Heritage Village
12 km from Puri, this entire village of ~130 families are hereditary Pattachitra artists — a UNESCO-recognised craft tradition. Walls, floors, and ceilings of every home are painted in the bold mythological Pattachitra style.
OdishaRide cab takes 20 minutes from Puri. You can watch artists at work and buy directly from makers — far more authentic than city shops.Chilika Lake Day Trip
Asia's largest brackish lagoon is 55 km from Puri. Boat safaris at Satapada reveal Irrawaddy dolphins, dense migratory birdlife (Oct–Feb), and the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary island. The water spreads to the horizon like an inland sea.
OdishaRide can arrange a Chilika day excursion from Puri. Depart by 7 AM to reach Satapada for the 8 AM dolphin boat.Puri Seafood Experience
Puri's fish market on the northern beach delivers overnight catch to local restaurants each morning. The prawn curry, crab masala, and pomfret fry here are among the finest seafood meals in Odisha — priced far below tourist restaurants.
For the most authentic meal: ask your OdishaRide driver to take you to the local-facing restaurants along the sea road rather than Marine Drive tourist strips.Swargadwar Ghat
The sacred cremation ghat beside the sea, where Hindus believe cremation brings immediate moksha (liberation). The atmosphere at dusk — oil lamps, chanting, the sound of the ocean — is deeply moving regardless of faith.
Visit respectfully in the late afternoon. Photography requires discretion — follow local cues. The Sun Temple
The entire structure is conceived as the chariot of Surya, the Sun God, drawn by seven horses across the sky. 24 wheels along the base function as precise sundials, each divided into 8 spokes representing the 3-hour prahars (time divisions) of the day. Every surface is covered in sculpture.
The temple complex opens at 6 AM — arriving early means softer light and fewer crowds. Last entry is 8 PM. Entrance fee applies; carry exact change or a UPI app.Archaeological Museum
Many of Konark's most extraordinary sculptures were removed for protection and are now housed in the on-site museum — including the famous erotic friezes, celestial figures, and battle scenes that once adorned the temple's middle registers.
The museum is included in the temple complex ticket. Spend 45–60 minutes here; the context it provides transforms how you read the main temple's remaining carvings.Chandrabhaga Beach
3 km north of the temple, Chandrabhaga is one of the cleanest and quietest beaches on Odisha's coast. The annual Chandrabhaga Mela (beach fair) held here each February draws pilgrims who bathe at sunrise in the sacred confluence of river and sea.
The beach is essentially deserted on most days — a sharp contrast to Puri. Great for a quiet lunch and afternoon swim (surf is calmer here than Puri).Sound & Light Show
Each evening after sunset, a sound and light show narrates the history of the Sun Temple against the lit backdrop of the structure itself. Running approximately 45 minutes in both Hindi and English, it's one of the best such shows in India.
Show timings vary by season (roughly 7 PM in summer, 6:30 PM in winter). Book tickets in advance during peak tourist season (Nov–Feb) as seats are limited.Konark Dance Festival
Each December for five evenings, classical dancers perform against the illuminated backdrop of the Sun Temple — Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi and more. Considered one of India's finest open-air dance settings.
Festival dates fall in the first week of December. Tickets sell out weeks in advance. OdishaRide can arrange evening transfers from Puri for the show and back.Ramachandi Temple
5 km from Konark at the mouth of the Kushabhadra River where it meets the sea, this small but sacred Shakti temple sits at a point of unusual natural beauty. Popular for a short stop on the Konark–Puri coastal road.
The coastal road between Konark and Puri (via the Konark Marine Drive) is one of the most scenic 35 km drives in Odisha — ask your OdishaRide driver to use this route.Odishan Cuisine — What to Try
Odishan food is subtly spiced, temple-influenced, and extraordinarily fresh on the coast. These are non-negotiables.

Lentils slow-cooked with raw papaya, banana, and seasonal vegetables in a no-onion, no-garlic Vaishnav tradition. The official state dish.

Odisha claims the original rasagola (before Bengal!) — lighter, less syrupy. Chhena Gaja is a denser fried cottage cheese sweet. Both are available from every sweet shop on Grand Road, Puri.
Where: Puri Grand Road sweet shopsBest Time to Visit Odisha's Golden Triangle
Odisha is a year-round destination, but the experience varies significantly by season.
Winter — Peak Season
The undisputed best window. Cool 15–25°C temperatures, clear skies, and low humidity make sightseeing pleasurable. Konark Dance Festival (Dec) and Puri Sand Art Festival (Nov) fall here.
⭐ Highly RecommendedSummer — Hot & Quiet
Temperatures reach 38–42°C in April–May. Crowds thin out significantly and hotel prices drop. Early morning temple visits are manageable; afternoons are best spent indoors or on the beach with sea breezes.
Manageable with PlanningMonsoon — Lush & Dramatic
Heavy rainfall transforms Odisha — forests turn vivid green, waterfalls peak, and the landscape becomes genuinely beautiful. Temple crowds thin dramatically. The famous Rath Yatra of Jagannath falls in June/July. Coastal travel is restricted during cyclone warnings.
Good for Adventurous TravellersPost-Monsoon — Shoulder Season
Early October still sees residual monsoon showers and humidity. Cyclone risk is highest on the coast in October–November. From late October, conditions improve rapidly. The Durga Puja and Diwali period brings a festive energy to Bhubaneswar.

Temple Etiquette
- Remove footwear before entering any temple premises — no exceptions.
- Dress conservatively: covered shoulders and knees for entry to major temples.
- Leather items (belts, bags) are often prohibited inside temple inner sanctums.
- Non-Hindus cannot enter the inner sanctum of Jagannath Temple or Lingaraj Temple — but the outer complex and surroundings are accessible and extraordinary.
- Photography rules vary: check signs at each temple. Mobile phones are generally permitted outside.
Money & Payments
- UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe) is accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops in all three cities.
- Carry cash for temple entry, small shops, beach vendors, and rickshaws — especially in Puri's inner old city.
- ATMs are abundant in Bhubaneswar and Puri; Konark has limited options — withdraw before arriving.
- Negotiate auto-rickshaw fares before boarding in Puri — set the price first.
- OdishaRide fares are fully transparent with no hidden charges — confirm pricing at booking.
Where to Stay
- Bhubaneswar: Wide range from budget guesthouses near the temple complex to 5-star properties on NH16 corridor.
- Puri: Stay on Marine Drive for sea views; stay near Grand Road (Badadanda) for temple proximity. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for October–January.
- Konark: Very limited accommodation — most visitors day-trip from Puri or Bhubaneswar. A handful of OTDC properties near the temple for those wanting to stay.
- OdishaRide can recommend and arrange accommodation; contact us at odisharide.com.
What to Pack
- Oct–Feb: Light cottons for the day, a layer for cooler evenings (especially December–January).
- Jun–Sep: Quick-dry clothes, a good rain jacket, waterproof sandals.
- Temple socks (thin cotton socks) — temple courtyard stones get burning hot in summer.
- Sun protection is essential year-round on the coastal stretch.
- Power bank: heritage sites often have limited charging; blackouts are occasional in smaller towns.
