Why Bhubaneswar

The Temple City Most Travellers Rush Past

Most people treat Bhubaneswar as a transit stop — a night between a flight and a taxi to Puri. That is one of the great mistakes you can make in Odisha.

Bhubaneswar is the Temple City of India — once home to over 700 temples, around 500 still stand, making the old city one of the densest concentrations of living Hindu religious architecture on the planet. The great Lingaraj Temple, built in the 11th century, is a 55-metre shikhara rising above a compound that encloses 150 subsidiary shrines — a sacred city within a city.

This hour-by-hour guide covers the six unmissable stops — planned in the right order to beat the heat, avoid crowd peaks, and connect each site efficiently using an OdishaRide cab. Whether you have a single day in transit or you've built Bhubaneswar into your Odisha itinerary properly, this is the circuit the city deserves.

The sites fall into two zones: the Old City temple cluster (Lingaraj, Mukteswar, Rajarani — walkable from each other) and the western outskirts (Udayagiri–Khandagiri Caves and Dhauligiri, 6–8 km away). A cab is the only practical way to do both in one day.

🗒 Before You Go
👕Dress code: Covered shoulders and knees at all temples. No shorts or sleeveless tops.
👟Footwear: Remove shoes at all temple premises. Thin cotton socks help on hot stone courtyards.
📵No phones inside Lingaraj. Leather items (belts, bags) also banned. Leave in the OdishaRide cab.
💧Carry water — especially April–September. Temple courtyards have no shade.
🛕Lingaraj inner sanctum: Hindu visitors only. Non-Hindus use the Curzon Platform on the north side — full exterior view.
💵Carry ₹200–400 cash for ASI entry, prasad and shoe-keeping.
🚖Book OdishaRide the night before — pre-arrange rather than hailing on the day.

Hindu Temple · Kalinga Architecture
Lingaraj Temple 📸 Best Light
11th Century AD — Dedicated to Lord Harihara (Shiva + Vishnu)
Old City⏱ 90 minutes

Begin here at dawn — not just because it opens at 6 AM, but because the morning light on Lingaraj's 180-foot sandstone shikhara is something that doesn't exist at any other time of day. The temple is the largest in Bhubaneswar and the supreme achievement of Kalinga architecture — a 55-metre tower rising from a compound enclosing 150 subsidiary shrines, forming a complete sacred city within its walls. The main deity, Harihara, is a rare fused form of Shiva and Vishnu — embodying the unity of two great traditions in one extraordinary form.

✓ Free Entry ⏰ Open 6 AM – 9 PM ⚠ Hindus only — Inner Sanctum 👁 Curzon Platform for non-Hindus
  • Arrive no later than 6:15 AM — peaceful, cool, and crowd-free. By 9 AM it fills dramatically.
  • Non-Hindu visitors: the Curzon Viewing Platform on the north side gives a full elevated view — this is actually where the best exterior photographs are taken.
  • Phones, cameras and leather items banned inside the compound. Leave in the OdishaRide cab.
  • Walk the outer boundary wall to see the carved erotic and mythological registers — accessible to everyone.
  • Don't miss Bindusagar tank just north — a sacred 700ft × 1300ft lake whose waters are said to contain drops from every holy river in India.
Insider Tip: The temple closes for bhoga (ritual food offering) roughly 12:30–3:30 PM. Your early visit avoids this entirely. The new 2026 illumination system makes an evening return worthwhile — the shikhara appears to float against the night sky.

Mukteswar & Parasurameswara 📸 Top Shot
Mukteswar: 10th C · Parasurameswara: 7th Century AD
Old City⏱ 60 minutes

Two minutes' walk from Lingaraj, this pair represents the full range of Bhubaneswar's architectural heritage. Mukteswar is called the "Gem of Odishan Architecture" — smaller than Lingaraj but arguably the most refined temple in the city. Its torana (ornamental arched gateway) is unique in all of Indian temple art: a latticed diamond-net arch carved with female figures, serpents and Tantric imagery executed with extraordinary skill. Nearby Parasurameswara is Bhubaneswar's oldest surviving temple — built in the 7th century, 400 years before Lingaraj — showing the earlier, simpler Kalinga style before it reached its mature peak.

✓ Free Entry (Both) ⏰ Sunrise to Sunset ✓ Open to All Visitors
  • The Mukteswar torana is the single best-preserved and most photogenic element in all of Bhubaneswar — morning light before 9 AM hits it perfectly.
  • The temple tank beside Mukteswar hosts the annual Mukteswar Dance Festival every January.
  • Parasurameswara's carved panels show Lakulisha, founder of Pashupata Shaivism — among the oldest Shaivite narrative carvings in eastern India.
Nearby: Brahmeswara Temple (850 AD) is 500 metres away — its five-tower composition is worth a 15-minute detour if you have time.

11th Century AD — The "Love Temple" of Bhubaneswar
Old City · ASI⏱ 45 minutes

Rajarani is unique among Bhubaneswar's major temples — it has no presiding deity and no active worship, making it fully open to all visitors regardless of faith. The temple is built from a reddish-gold sandstone called rajarani, giving it a visually distinct warm glow. Its design features projecting towers at the cardinal points rather than a single smooth shikhara, and its exterior sculpture is among the finest in Odisha — particularly the dik-pala guardian deity figures and the lushly carved female apsaras applying kajal, holding mirrors and playing instruments.

₹25 Entry (Indian) · ₹300 (Foreign) ⏰ 6 AM – 6 PM ✓ Open to All — ASI Monument
  • No active worship means you can explore quietly at your own pace — entirely different from Lingaraj's busy atmosphere.
  • The reddish-gold stone glows beautifully in morning and late afternoon light — best photographs before 10 AM.
  • Annual Rajarani Music Festival held here each January under the open sky — one of Odisha's finest classical music settings.

After three temples, breakfast is well-earned. The old city has several reliable options and your OdishaRide driver will know the best local spot within five minutes.

  • Dalma + puri — the classic Odishan breakfast. Available at any local tiffin centre near the Lingaraj area.
  • Chuda ghasa (beaten rice with curd, banana and jaggery) — light, energising, genuinely local.
  • Kheeri with poori (rice pudding) — widely available and filling.

Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves 📸 Photo
1st Century BC — Built during King Kharavela's reign
Western Bhubaneswar⏱ 90 minutes

A complete change of register from the sandstone temple cluster — and one of the most underrated archaeological sites in India. Cut into laterite rock by the Jain king Kharavela around the 1st century BC, the 33 caves across both hills served as monastic retreats and predate the Bhubaneswar temples by over a thousand years. Udayagiri's Rani Ka Naur (Queen's Palace cave) is the largest — a double-storey cave with sculpted elephants, women and mythological scenes framing its entrance. The Hathigumpha inscription of Kharavela is one of the most important historical texts in India. From the summit of Khandagiri, the panoramic view over modern Bhubaneswar from an ancient hilltop is the city's great unexpected pleasure.

₹25 Entry (Indian) · ₹300 (Foreign) ⏰ Sunrise – Sunset ✓ Open to All 🎒 Comfortable shoes needed
  • Do Udayagiri first (larger, more caves) then cross the road to Khandagiri. Your OdishaRide cab can wait between the two hills.
  • The Hathigumpha inscription is on Udayagiri's lower rockface — Brahmi script from approximately 150 BC, still clearly readable.
  • Summit of Khandagiri: 20-minute climb on well-marked steps, small Jain temple at the top, stunning city views.
  • A Jain pilgrimage community still actively uses Khandagiri — you may see white-robed monks at prayer.
Insider Tip: No vendors on the hillside. Buy water at the base before climbing and take it with you.

Dhauligiri — Where History Changed
Ashokan Edicts: 3rd Century BC · Shanti Stupa: 1970s
Daya River⏱ 45 minutes

This quiet hilltop carries a weight that no photograph can fully convey. It was here, in 261 BC, that the Kalinga War took place — a battle so catastrophically violent that it transformed Emperor Ashoka from a conqueror into one of history's great advocates of nonviolence. His famous remorse is recorded in the Dhauligiri rock edicts, carved directly into the rock face and still clearly visible in Brahmi script. The white Shanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda) built in the 1970s by Japanese Buddhist organisations stands above the edicts — a genuinely moving monument to the transformation this place catalysed.

✓ Free Entry ⏰ Open All Day ✓ Open to All
  • The Ashokan rock edicts are at the base of the hill — protected behind railings. The 3rd-century BC Brahmi inscriptions are among the oldest in India.
  • The elephant carving beside the edicts — its trunk and legs emerging naturally from the living stone — is one of the most distinctive pieces of ancient Indian art.
  • The hilltop view over the Daya River valley is genuinely beautiful and offers welcome shade under the pagoda portico.
Timing tip: Arrive before 1 PM to avoid peak midday heat. Alternatively, come here last at 4 PM — the white stupa glows gold in late afternoon light.

The 1–4 PM window is Bhubaneswar's hottest part of the day. Temple courtyards become brutal. Use this time for a proper Odishan thali lunch at an AC restaurant and rest before the evening programme.

  • Odishan thali — dalma, macha jhola (fish curry), saga bhaja, khata, rice and rasagola. Available at most mid-range restaurants in Janpath or Master Canteen area.
  • Chhena Poda — Odisha's famous caramelised cottage cheese sweet. Eat it warm from an Odishan sweet shop.
  • Ask your OdishaRide driver for their own favourite lunch spot — they'll know somewhere better than any travel guide.

Ekamra Haat
Odisha's Premier Traditional Craft Market
Bhubaneswar⏱ 2 hours

The ideal finale to a day of ancient stone is an evening among living craft. Ekamra Haat is a permanent open-air market where artisans from across Odisha sell directly — Pattachitra scroll paintings, Sambalpuri silk sarees, silver Tarakasi filigree jewellery, Dhokra brass castings, stone carvings, appliqué and bamboo work. Every stall is managed by its maker, not a middleman. On weekends, the central stage hosts live Odissi and Chhau dance performances beginning around 6–7 PM.

✓ Free Entry ⏰ 10 AM – 9 PM Daily ✓ Open to All
  • Buy Pattachitra directly from the artists — fair prices and genuinely handmade, unlike tourist shop copies.
  • Silver Tarakasi filigree from Cuttack artisans is among the finest in the state — look for the intricate wire-work earrings and pendants in the far section.
  • Weekend dance performances: check the notice board at the main entrance on arrival for the evening's programme.
  • Street food stalls along the perimeter sell chhena gaja, chaat and local snacks — perfect for an early evening nibble.
Insider Tip: Don't buy from the first stalls at the entrance — walk the full market first. The best Pattachitra artists are in the far section, away from the entrance crowd.

Common Questions

One Day in Bhubaneswar — FAQs

One full day (6 AM–9 PM) covers the six essential stops comfortably with an OdishaRide cab — Lingaraj, Mukteswar & Parasurameswara, Rajarani, Udayagiri-Khandagiri Caves, Dhauligiri and Ekamra Haat. Two days allow you to add the Odisha State Museum, Nandankanan Zoo and additional temple clusters at a more relaxed pace.

Non-Hindus cannot enter the main compound of Lingaraj Temple. However, the Curzon Viewing Platform on the north side is open to all visitors during daylight hours — it provides an elevated view of the full 180-foot shikhara. Many photographers actually prefer this vantage point. All other stops on this itinerary are fully open to visitors of all faiths.

Lingaraj, Mukteswar, Parasurameswara, Dhauligiri and Ekamra Haat are all free. Rajarani Temple charges ₹25 for Indian nationals (₹300 for foreign nationals). Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves charge ₹25 for Indian nationals (₹300 for foreign nationals). Total entry cost for an Indian national doing this full circuit: approximately ₹50.

October to March is the ideal season — pleasant temperatures of 15–28°C. Avoid outdoor temple courtyards from 11 AM to 3 PM in summer (April–September) when Bhubaneswar can reach 42°C. This itinerary is specifically designed to keep you indoors or resting during that heat window.

A pre-booked cab from OdishaRide is the most efficient option. The old city temple cluster is walkable internally, but the western sites (Udayagiri Caves, Dhauligiri) are 6–8 km away and require a vehicle. Book at odisharide.com or call +91 9114446999.

Yes — morning Bhubaneswar temple circuit (Lingaraj + Mukteswar + Rajarani, 6–11 AM) followed by an OdishaRide cab to Puri (65 km, ~1.5 hrs) for the afternoon and evening works very well. Skip Udayagiri and Dhauligiri and save them for another visit. This is one of OdishaRide's most popular day circuits — book at odisharide.com.
